General News: Myachi Craze Comes to Cornwall

The myachi toy comes in many colors but only one size -- small!
The myachi toy comes in many colors but only one size -- small!
October 30, 2008

A new craze is being introduced to the children of Cornwall, thanks to a fundraising effort by the parents at Cornwall Elementary School.

Myachi is the name of a 3 x 1.5 inch handsack that is tossed into the air and caught, but its appeal comes from a series of martial arts moves and games to be played with the tiny toy.

Cornwall parent JoAnn Parker came up with the idea of bringing the myachi to Cornwall after she saw a demonstration of it on the Martha Stewart show.  She liked how you had to become active to use the myachi and the fact that it is relatively inexpensive as well.   She contacted the creators of the toy who agreed to come to Cornwall Elementary School this Monday, November 3, to demonstrate some of the games you can play with it.   Myachis will also be on sale at the event, including customized sacks with the Green Dragon logo.  Proceeds will be used to fund activities for the school’s fourth grade class.

Myachi games include big air,  in which participants see who can catch the highest toss, and best tricks, with participants trying to outdo one another in fancy moves with the handsack. Tricks include catching the sack on your head or foot, tossing it under the leg or behind the back, or moving your hand around the sack while it's in the air.

The myachi store at Cornwall Elementary School in the cafetorium will open at 4:30 p.m.   Kid Myach and another member of the Myachi team will be on hand from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. to demonstrate the moves and hold contests with the children.
