General News: New Owners for 2 Alices Coffee Lounge

Aurelia and Mikey love coffee - and films.

The 2 Alices Coffee Lounge in Cornwall-on-Hudson has new owners.   On Tuesday morning, Aurelia Winborn and Mikey Jackson took over the reins of the popular gathering place from former owner Lucinda Poindexter, who opened the lounge with her former business partner, Edda Quinn, in June 2006.

Aurelia and Mikey say that they plan to keep 2 Alices much like the place they found so appealing when they first visited Cornwall-on-Hudson barely a year-and-a-half ago.   The couple and their toddler son, Atticus, had driven up from Brooklyn and were exploring the countryside when they saw the coffee lounge and stopped in. They liked the coffee and the welcoming atmosphere of 2 Alices so much, they looked around for a house to move into.

Today, Aurelia and Mikey have settled into a home in the village. They both work as camera technicians in film and television and take turns working on productions so one of them is always home.

When they heard that Lucinda was selling the coffee lounge, where they had become frequent visitors, they were nervous that someone would buy it and change it drastically.   That’s when Aurelia got the idea to buy the place. Mikey says he thought she was crazy at first but as the couple talked about it they saw that running 2 Alices could fit in nicely with their work schedules.

“This is a way to build a life here,” Aurelia said in a brief interview at the coffee lounge. “We want to invest in the community and be part of it.”

They give former owner Poindexter a lot of credit for creating a great place to listen to music, meet your friends and drink delicious coffee and tea and want to introduce just a few changes in the weeks ahead.

Fruit smoothies will be added to the menu, along with freshly prepared sandwiches. Mikey says that the weekend music shows will continue and he also would like to have more poetry readings, trivia nights, and possibly a Cornwall talent show. He suggests that a Cornwall macaroni and cheese club could be popular for those who don’t want to cook every night. A children’s storyteller or singer could appeal to mothers and their young kids during the day, he says.   The couple also intends to apply for a license to serve wine, which they would do in the evenings.

“Lucinda created a great place,” Aurelia says. “We want to continue it and grow.”
