General News: Traffic Accident Claims One Life

October 21, 2008

A 94-year-old Cornwall man is dead following an accident involving a dump truck and two passenger vehicles at 11:30 a.m. on Monday at the intersection of Route 32 and Quaker Avenue in Cornwall.  Cornwall police chief Todd Hazard identified the deceased as Howard Seaman.

Police report that the accident occurred when a 1989 GMC dump truck owned by Netos Philos Enterprises of Mineola, N.Y., was headed north on Rt. 32 when Seaman's 1999 Chevrolet that was traveling south on Route 32 attempted to make a left turn onto Quaker Avenue in the path of the dump truck.

The operator of the dump truck, Walter Pizzano, 42, of the Bronx attempted to avoid a collision and overturned. When the dump truck overturned it spilled its load of dirt and rocks and the body of the dump truck and the load landed on the 1999 Chevrolet.   Seaman was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Hazard.

After the dump truck landed on the Chevrolet it struck a 2000 Honda that was being operated by Melissa Fienco, 29, of Cornwall.

Both Feinco and Pizzano were taken to the Cornwall Hospital for minor injuries. Cornwall police were assisted at the scene by the New York State Police as well as Cornwall and Vails Gate fire departments. The accident is still under investigation.
