General News: Senator Backs Randazzo for Assembly

October 19, 2008

New York Senator Chuck Schumer came to Cornwall-on-Hudson Friday afternoon to endorse local Democrat Richard Randazzo, who is challenging incumbent Nancy Calhoun for her seat in the New York state assembly.

Senator Schumer, a fellow Democrat, had nothing but praise for candidate Randazzo, noting that when he was the supervisor of the town of Cornwall that  he ran a lean government that was not wasteful while still delivering services to “average folks.”  Schumer noted that during Randazzo’s time as supervisor, he oversaw the creation of  a volunteer ambulance corps, a recreation department, and affordable senior housing.

“He ran the town in a smart and lean way,” Schumer said, “That’s what we need in Albany.”

Randazzo re-iterated that theme, saying that when he is elected he will work to bring the kind of changes that bring economic opportunities.  “I am a fiscal conservative, I have been called ‘cheap’ by many people.” Randazzo said at the press conference held with Schumer at Painter’s restaurant. “ “We need to get Albany back on track.”

Schumer said that he was optimistic about Randazzo’s chance of defeating Calhoun this year, his third attempt to unseat the incumbent Republican/Conservative candidate. “The wind is at the back of the Democrats this year,” he said.

To learn more about the candidates, the public is invited to a debate between Randazzo and Assemblywoman Calhoun on Monday, October 20, at 7:30 p.m. at Monroe-Woodbury Elementary School on Route 32.

Comments:

Once again I am amazed at the length Schumer will go to get press coverage. Senator Schumer's endorsement of Richard Randazzo is about as surprising and compelling a news story as one that is dedicated to the rising of the sun in the East. It would also mean more if it didn't sound as if it wasn't lifted from a campaign mailing.
