General News: Village to Form Parking Committee

At Monday evening’s village board meeting, mayor Joe Gross announced his intention to form a citizens committee made up of residents and business people to look at the issue of parking and traffic flow in the village square. The board of trustees also agreed to move ahead with plans to re-stripe some parking spaces on Hudson Street and Idlewild Avenue that would add six additional spots.

The move to form a committee was made in part to channel public interest in the issue to a forum outside the formal trustee meetings. The issue of parking has dominated discussions for the past two months as residents and business owners debate the need for parking in the square and on River Avenue.

On Monday, the discussion went on for at least an hour, initiated by Ray Yannone, who owns the building housing Nicky’s restaurant and the adjacent ice cream bar. Yannone outlined all the projects he has undertaken on his buildings and said he never complained about anything until now. “I don’t think it is looking fairly at parking situation with the Riverbank,” Yannone told the board. He wants the village to stand by its agreement with the Riverbank to create additional parking to replace two prime spots he lost just outside the ice cream parlor when the Riverbank built a new patio. Residents of River Avenue spoke as well about issues from enhancing the current municipal lot to school bus safety. Consensus seemed far off. “Logic doesn’t seem to be prevailing,” said Rob Kirshner of River Avenue, who earlier defended his interest in the issue. “I spent thousands of dollars on my house,” he said. “These are our investments and my house is just as important to me as your restaurant is to you.”

Kirchner also supported the formation of the committee. Any resident of the village who would like to be on this committee should submit a letter stating their qualifications to village clerk Jeanne Mahoney at 325 Hudson Street.

Bob Gilmore, head of the department of public works, says to look for the crews out striping the street in the coming days.

Comments:

Went to use parking lot Tues night to listen to concert at the Bandstand. Arrived late, there were a few spaces towards the school, but were blocked due to other cars across the lot. Perhaps marking the spaces over there would make the lot more useful.
Actually on car was blocked in the back
row. There is room for at least 10 more cars at that end if marked properly. that is more than what was lost on River Ave.

If two spaces were lost by the patio, and six spaces will be gained through line-painting, precisely why are we still discussing this? If line painting still won't appease, it seems the only honorable thing for Tony Missere to do would be to dismantle his surreptiously-acquired Stonehenge, and give the two prime parking spots back.
