A group of residents on Jaeger Drive in Cornwall wants the speed limit reduced on their street.

In a letter to the Cornwall town board signed by seven people, they requested a lowering of the speed limit to 25 mph.  They also asked for a “Children at Play” sign and suggested that the street be made one-way.

Town council member Randy Clark, who lives near Jaeger Drive, later explained that when the traffic light was put in at Route 9W and Laurel Avenue an entry to Route 9W North from Chadeayne Avenue was closed off, forcing vehicles down Jaeger.

Clark also spoke at Monday’s town board meeting about limiting truck traffic on his street.  He cited a nuisance that had been created on Maple Street by a resident who owns a 10-wheeler and asked the board to consider imposing a weight limit.

Police chief Todd Hazard had his own request regarding Maple Street that he spelled out in a letter to the board.  He is proposing that parking on the street be banned Monday-Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.   The police department has responded to a spat of complaints about vehicles parked along Maple Street that make it very difficult for the school buses to round the corner from Laurel Avenue.   Many of those parking on Maple Street have turned out to work at St. Luke’s Cornwall hospital, who park there despite having their own parking lot near the hospital.

Comments:

If you want to talk about speeding look at broadway. This block is the one big speed zone. One day something really bad is going to happen on this block. This block really needs some type of stop sign or a kids saftey sign. \

I live on Maple Street and would NOT like a parking restriction on the ENTIRE street because the hospital (two blocks away) can't manage it's ever increasing parking lot. Ban parking between Laurel and Canterbury and people won't park there. It would be too far for them to walk. AND I'm for reducing the speed limit on Maple to 25mph. Many joggers, bicyclists, people with baby strollers and middle school kids going to school use Maple Street -- The cars I watch whiz by my house almost always go all the way to Willow or Laurel and turn -- so cars and trucks are using it as a bypass.

It sure is comforting to know that residents are concerned with speed and safety and quality of life to pursue speed issues. I agree with the speed on Broadway people use it to bypass Main st. I believe with no hesitation that the speed limit on all roads should be 25 and strictly enforced.
