The first year’s crop at the community garden in Mountainville is being harvested and plans are being made for a larger area to be cultivated next spring.

The community garden was the brainchild of local businessman Deke Hazirjian and organic farmer Guy Jones, of Blooming Hill Farm.   Hazirjian wanted to grow vegetables and herbs to sell at his new restaurant in Cornwall, “Woody’s All-Natural” and to encourage other people to plant vegetables in small plots that they lease from him and Jones for a small annual fee.

Twenty-four plots were planted this summer with a wide variety of produce.  Jan Johnson, who was one of the few experienced gardeners there,  grew 23 different plants, including corn and Brussels sprouts.   Guy Jones made weekly visits to the garden, which he owns under a agreement with the Open Space Institute, and gave the green gardeners growing tips.

“It was a learning experience for everyone,”  Hazirjian said.  “We were all new to gardening and we learned from each other.” (See article and photos of the garden when it was first planted.)

On Saturday, the gardeners got together for a harvest meal.  They set up stoves and fires next to the garden and feasted on the produce that was cooked up into tasty dishes like grilled squash quesadillas.

Hazirjian says that anyone who would like to reserve a garden plot for next year should contact Blooming Hill Farm, where you join the farm’s Community Supported Agriculture program and become eligible for a plot.

Comments:

We found out a little late after becoming csi members at blooming hill farm but we are on the list for next year for this marvelous endeavor by Deke and Guy. We had the pleasure of a guided tour by Deke and it was impressive to say the least I cant wait for next year! Excellent Work!
