General News: Cornwall United Soccer Week 4

October 01, 2008

GU9
The U9 Lady Tigers won their third straight game, beating Wappingers 4-1.  The girls started slow, but things got turned around when Samantha Argenio and Madeline Dwyer each scored goals.  Carly Seigelbaum broke down the defense with her speed to score the third goal.  Erin Dempsey fired in the final score on a beautiful pass from Taylor Mellon.  Keeper Nicole Shapiro was once again exceptional in net, making several diving stops.

GU12
Cornwall Predators dominated the previously undefeated Highland Sting, winning 2-0. The Predators’ pressure-packed midfield of Jacqueline Hogan, Victoria Colotti, Kelsey Fosstviet, and Erin Geraghty kept control of the ball throughout the game. The opponent’s powerful offense was shut down with stellar defensive performances from Predators’ Fiona Durkin and Erin Leahy. Both Emily Gallo and Samantha Sabini had great games in goal. Julia Kerr was dominant as striker scoring both goals for Cornwall.

GU13-CYCLONES
The Cyclones offense exploded today, outscoring the Wappingers Dreamcatchers by a score of 5-2.  Cornwall lead 3-0 at the half with goals by Alex Steinman, Stephanie Soto and Samantha Fowler.  Second half goals by Rebecca Baumel and Olivia Tellefsen negated the effect of two goals by the Dreamcatchers.   Cornwall dominated both ends of the field throughout the game.  Judy Dianis stole the ball and made many key passes.  Krissy McGonnigle, Jessica McGowan and Rose Foody played superb defense, controlling the ball and frustrating the much larger Wappingers team.  Outstanding goal keeping by Siobhan Lyons sealed the fate of the Dreamcatchers.

GU13-DRAGONFIRE
The Dragonfire tied 1-1 against Yorktown Spirit. Kelly Gleason scored the lone goal for the Dragonfire off a penalty kick. Jocelyn Burns, Ileana LaGrutta and Alex Jurgens were aggressive on defense. Cathy Eliasson was outstanding in the goal.

BU8
The U8 Cobras continued their shutout streak by beating the Monroe Hurricanes 6-0. Trace Toweson (3), Cameron Growney, Henry Flores and William Leonard finished opportunities set up by Alex Burns, Ryan Trieste and Joseph Maddalena. Connor Doyle and Liam Evans split duties as the goalkeeper. The win takes the Cobras to 3-0. Next up for the Cobras is a day at West Point as the guests of the Army Men's Soccer team. The boys will walk onto the field with the team during introductions and scrimmage during halftime of this Saturday's Army-Colgate Patriot League match.

 BU9
Playing with only one substitute, the Talons put forth a valiant effort but fell to Red Hook 5-1. Marco Sprenkle showed his flair, ball control and determination by scoring his second goal of the season. The team's steady set play artist, Jake Schulman, once again created many scoring chances with his accuracy and striking ability. Andrew Sheehan and Nico Gallo played gritty and relentless defense for the Cornwall team. Cornwall’s defensive backbone Nick Caldwell demonstrated his all around skills and tireless play by leading the team's transition to offense.

BU13
Slippery game today ended in a 3-1 loss to the Mahopac Arrows.  Jake McCrea scored the lone Cornwall goal in the final minutes of play on a setup by Damon Neil.  Fantastic defensive effort from Ty Molloy while Ian Barnes worked hard in the left wing.
