Softball players from the village of Cornwall-on-Hudson wrested the title back from the town of Cornwall on Sunday in the annual match-up between the two rivals. The final score in the seven-inning game was 17-2.

The village team was up first and village police officer John Pena set the tone for his team with a lead-off home run. Several other players hit balls out of the field, including Danny Nye, who sailed two over the fence.

The teams are composed of village and town employees from all areas of government, but rely heavily on those from the police departments and department of public works and highways. Each team included a female player. Jessie Crouch of the recreation department, played outfield for the town and police officer Jill Nye slugged for the village.

In the fifth inning, Joe Ricco scored the first run for the town. His hit was followed by a homer launched by police officer Nick Casullo that gave the town team its second and final run.

Town elected officials took their chances on the field. Council member Randy Clark was in the line-up during the second inning and after looking over a lot of pitches during his at-bat took over as umpire. Town supervisor Kevin Quigley had several at-bats and got on base a couple of times.

Police chiefs from both municipalities seemed to be enjoying themselves. Cornwall police chief Todd Hazard played catcher and Cornwall-on-Hudson police chief Charles Williams played third.

Bob Goldsmith, of the highway department, pitched the game for the town. Water department employee Matt Clancy was on the mound for the village.
