General News: Cornwall Student Honored in Literary Contest
June 30, 2007
Fourteen-year-old Matthew Soltis of Cornwall has received an Honorable Mention Award as a state semi-finalist for his entry in the ‘Letters About Literature Contest’ for 2007, according to the Cornwall Public Library.
In the contest, children across the nation selected a book that took them on an exciting or inspiring journey. After reading it, they wrote a letter to the author explaining how the book changed their view of the world or themselves.
Soltis, who is a student at Cornwall Central High School, has a strong interest in American History. He chose to write a letter to James Bradley, author of the book Flags of our Fathers. In it, he described how the book made him feel and how it helped him experience history through the author’s eyes.
The judges selected 150 Honorable Mention Awardees from more than 1300 New York State entries, Matthew joins 5000 state semi-finalists selected nationally from over 56,000 entries. Information about the 2008 Letters about Literature will be available at the Cornwall Public Library or at www.newyorkbooks.org in August.
