Fireworks end the concert season at Trophy Point.
June 29, 2007

By Brendan Coyne, Chair of Cornwall Independence Day Committee

The Cornwall Independence Day Committee will present its annual celebration on Wednesday, July 4, on the town hall grounds. The festivities start at 7 a.m. with breakfast at Highland Engine Company and finish with a spectacular fireworks display at 9:45 p.m.

In between, the committee will provide a wide variety of festivities, especially for children, including the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Pet Show, games, a pie-eating contest, face painting, karaoke, pony rides, Sam the Magician and Macaroni the Clown.

Patriotic artwork by elementary school children will be on display. The teenage rock band “Within the Walls” will perform in the afternoon. Children are welcome to join the bicycle unit of the parade; information will be available at the committee tent.

The Sands Ring Homestead, across from the town hall, will hold an open house from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the Cornwall Historical Society will host a table on the town hall grounds from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Crafts Fair, with more than 40 craftspeople, will run all day. Cornwall’s church bells will ring at 2 p.m. to replicate the ringing of the new nation’s church bells on July 4, 1776. The late afternoon gets busy with the Main Street Mile kicking off at 4:30 p.m., the parade stepping off at 5 p.m., the Flag Ceremony starting at 6:15 p.m. and the Historical Pageant starting at 6:30 p.m. The rock band, JDA, will perform at 7:30 p.m.

The parade will honor former Cornwall high school counselor and community servant Anna Vandermark.

The celebration will offer plenty to eat, including lobsters provided by the Cornwall Lions Club from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Volunteers are always welcome to help sell water, soda, loop-a-lites and T-shirts to raise the $35,000 required to fund the celebration. Just talk to someone under the committee tent. Donations, too, are always welcome; they can be sent to: CIDC, P.O. Box 542, Cornwall, NY 12518.
