General News: Public Meeting on Police

Police chief Charles Williams and Mayor Joe Gross on Thursday morning.
Police chief Charles Williams and Mayor Joe Gross on Thursday morning.
August 21, 2008

The public meeting to discuss the consolidation of police resources with the both the village and town boards will be held on Tuesday, September 2, at 8 p.m. in the COVAC building on Clinton Street in Cornwall.

The village board first raised the issue of cost-savings that could be found in consolidation several months ago. Town supervisor Kevin Quigley suggested that the best way to address the issue would be in a joint meeting with the two boards.

Cornwall-on-Hudson mayor Joe Gross said today that he has an open mind about the future of the village police department. He said he has been advised that the village could pursue several options to save money while providing police services to the village of Cornwall-on-Hudson. These include consolidating the village department with that of the town or eliminating the village department and asking the town for coverage.

Gross said that he wants to get a price from the town for its police department to provide protection to the village. He said that he is interested in getting a police officer in the village 24 hours a day, seven days a week, as well as police presence at special events. Currently, a village officer is on duty for bandstand concerts, parades, graduation events at the riverfront, and other civic celebrations.

The public is invited to attend the September 2nd meeting.

If the Mayor really wanted to save taxpayers money he should just abolish the whole Village of Cornwall on Hudson as a Government entity. The Village is just a duplication of services of the Town. An added bonus is that the Town Supervisor is a Village resident. So I suspect that the Mayor is not interested in saving taxpayers money but rather being a bully and trying to intimidate the current police employees.

If we only have one village officer on duty at night and our cars are being broken into, how is eliminating the village PD going to improve the current conditions? As it is there is not enough coverage. Now the town is going to be able to provide the same if not more that what the village is currently doing? Geez, our ridiculously high taxes have to go toward something valuable. If I live in the village and pay both town and village taxes, there should be both a town and village PD.

if we become affiliated with the town our property values will decrease

So, Mike, you "suspect that the mayor is not interested in saving taxpayers money but rather being a bully and trying to intimidate the current police employees." ? I would be ROTFLMAO if it weren't such a totally ridiculous and unfounded statement. You obviously don't know the Mayor at all. I would bet that you have not been to a village meeting and I would bet that you are not raising a family in the village. My money says that you are listening to the old farts that hang out and gossip and crab about everything. Mayor Gross is very concerned about money that is unwisely spent (he pays taxes, too, you know)and he is very concerned about the quality of life in the village. That is why this issue is being brought up; for DISCUSSION and evaluation. It never ceases to amaze me when people bitch and moan about the way things are and then bitch and moan when someone tries to effect an improvement or a change. I personally have no preference for town or village PD. (there is only one reduction that I want to see) but if you feel strongly about the issue get thee to a meeting!

Why can't both police departments work together? Let some town cops "cross the village line" and vice versa. We are all neighbors, and Cornwall and the village would benefit from this action. Remember, our police are people too. They want to do a great job...let them! Please, don't throw out the baby with the bath water!
