In an auditorium full of encouraging educators and proud family members, students filled their seats for the 2007 fourth grade moving up ceremony at the Cornwall-on-Hudson Elementary School.
School principal Kenneth A. Schmidt welcomed people to the ceremony and acknowledged those moving up, saying, “These young students have reached this milestone with hard work.”
Principal Schmidt also honored all loved ones and teachers. He had special words for retiring teacher Richard Miller, who received a standing ovation for his 32 years at the Cornwall-on-Hudson Elementary School.
Three fourth graders captivated the audience with brief descriptions of their experiences at the school: Catherine Schwarzler reminisced about the past, Norah Silverstone described the present, and Samantha Reed spoke of the future. “I’m very nervous, but very excited,” explained Reed. “After eighth grade, I will find myself in High School – I’m very excited to get there. Look out middle school – here we come!”
The fourth-grade chorus then charmed the audience with the songs Colors of the Wind and It Starts with Me, which were symbolic of commendable conduct and expression.
Following the conclusion of awards, Principal Schmidt presented the fourth graders with certificates of completion while members of the school district and PTO representatives congratulated the students. The ceremony ended with Guy Maisonet playing a trumpet fanfare with pianist Karen Boden.
A delightful reception followed at the Village Bandstand, which, following tradition, had been decorated by the parents of third grade students. Bouquets of flowers and colorful balloons abounded while piles of treats filled the tables. Several fifth-grade band students serenaded the crowd under the direction of Lori Suckling.
Family, friends, and teachers thanked one another and some parents became nostalgic to see their child move on. The children, for their part, were more than happy for the first day of summer to begin.
