General News: String of Larcenies from Unlocked Vehicles

July 17, 2008

Cornwall-on-Hudson police are investigating the reported theft of items from unlocked vehicles parked on Spruce, Blackwell and Pine Streets that occurred overnight on Tuesday.

On Wednesday morning, police began receiving reports of three missing GPS’s, an Ipod, and a cell phone.

Cornwall-on-Hudson police chief Charles Williams said his department is investigating the thefts and reviewing data to look for trends in larcenies from vehicles in the village.

Williams also sent out a notice alerting residents to the string of larcenies and reminding them to remove any valuables and to lock their vehicles.  Williams said the vehicles that were targeted were parked on either the street or in people’s driveways.

He also sent two patrolmen out on foot on Thursday to  knock on doors in the area where the larcenies occurred.  The officers delivered a notice advising people to lock their vehicles and be alert for suspicious activity.

In his notice to residents, Williams also described a pair of men who knocked on the door of a village residence this week and asked to see the Central Hudson bill.  Central Hudson denies the men are its employees and suggests that they may be energy brokers who are trying to get clients to switch to a different energy provider.

Williams reports that Central Hudson said that no switch in service can be made before a confirmation of it is made in writing.

Comments:

These kids (or adults) are checking our cars every night to see if they are unlocked. I know this because I lock my car religiously ever since they took my stuff last summer. But the one time in a YEAR that I forgot to lock it, they got my stuff again. It is scary to think those creeps are lurking around and checking our cars every night. We should feel safe living in Cornwall on Hudson, but I definitely don't. Why is there only ONE officer on duty at night, anyway? For what we pay to live here we should be getting much more.

Well, now they are trying to merge the two police departments and I'm afraid you probably won't even see that one officer.

I've lived here my entire life and have never had any problem like that and never lock my cars. I'd bet this is just kids up to no good. Our village police department does a great job. Consolidation would be tragic. The Town is not at all interested. Ask anyone of the town board members they will tell you that. IF they were there would be no savings to Village residents. The town would end up having to increase the town taxes to accomodate a larger police force. If the Town formally says they won't merge, then we will be relying on the State Police for village protection. I happen to be a late night walker and I always see the Village police patroling all over the village when I walk. I only walk IN the Village late at night because Its the place I feel absolutely safe.

I can't believe the number of people getting their stuff ripped off lately. I would imagine it's pretty safe to say that the younger population of Cornwall are the culprits considering how many times you read about in the Police blotter about groups of kids being advised to "move along" at like 3am.

Not for nothing but who else here was allowed by their parents to wonder around Cornwall all night?

Isn't it amazing how these kids are out wandering the streets. Boy oh boy have times changed! I totally feel safe in the village and I DO NOT WANT TO MERGE our police departments!

Weren't Town Cops stopping kids for IDs after a certian time -- ?
