General News: Cornwall Co-op to Hold Farm Stand

Are you hungry for some fresh garden produce?

From the Cornwall Food Co-op

A group of residents seeking to open a food cooperative in the greater Cornwall area will hold the first in a series of Local Harvest events Sunday, July 20, featuring a farm stand offering fresh fruits and vegetables and baked goods from a variety of regional producers.

The event will also offer the public an opportunity to learn more about efforts underway to launch a food co-op in the greater Cornwall area and to support those efforts through the purchase of the latest seasonal produce from local farms.

Nearly 400 local residents responded to a survey posted online (www.cornwallfoodcoop.com) in May by co-op organizers to gauge public interest in a food cooperative and obtain more information on consumer preferences.  76% of respondents were from the Cornwall local school district.  Results of the survey will be announced at the co-op’s farm stand on July 20.  (See highlights of survey findings below.)

“We want to offer the public a taste of what the coop could bring to local residents—fruits and vegetables in season, fresh off the local farms, as well as a variety of other products that consumers are telling us they would like to purchase, all under one roof,” said co-op coordinator Stella Quinn.

While operating under the name “Cornwall Food Coop” since the co-op steering committee organized earlier this year, the organization is searching for a permanent name.  The committee recently launched a naming contest and will announce the results of the competition at the event on July 20.   The winner will receive a basket of fresh farm goods and a custom designed t-shirt with a vegetable theme.

Organizers are also in the process of seeking a storefront location for the coop in the greater Cornwall area.   Its first Local Harvest Farm Stand event, from 11 AM to 2 PM on July 20 will be located at the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum’s Outdoor Discovery Center on Route 9W in Cornwall (just south of the Angola Rd. exit).

Quinn said the co-op’s Local Harvest Farm Stand will feature fresh-off-the-farm summer produce  such as summer squash, zucchini, salad greens, new potatoes, sweet corn, peaches, and plums, depending on availability.  Also on sale will be locally milled grains and breads, all-natural cupcakes and mini-muffins, iced tea, and lemonade.

Regional farms and producers represented at the farm stand will include:  Blooming Hill Farm, C. Rowe & Sons, Cabbage Hill Farm, Prospect Hill Orchards, Wild Hive Farm, Enchanted Baker,  and 2 Alices Coffee Lounge.

Cornwall Food Co-op Survey Highlights

-Of the 388 people who took the survey, 76% reside in the Cornwall school district (Cornwall-on-Hudson, Cornwall, New Windsor, Mountainville, Salisbury Mills).

-342 respondents expressed interest in shopping at a Cornwall food co-op; 303 were interested in becoming members.

-Product quality and freshness were most important when deciding where to shop and what to buy, and convenience of store location and store hours were important to most survey takers.

-Respondents said they would "frequently buy" fresh and local produce and locally produced dairy, eggs, and meats.  More than half would frequently buy local breads and baked goods.

-275 respondents said they would take part in food-related educational events if offered at the co-op.

-More than 170 people indicated they would volunteer time for a Cornwall food co-op and help get it started.
