General News: Attorney Says He's Running for Mayor

Peter X. Neuman, a retired attorney who lives in Cornwall-on-Hudson, says he plans to run for village mayor in the election in March 2009.

Neuman, however, doesn’t plan to start campaigning until January,  well after the general elections in November.

He says his chief reason for running is to provide a plan for growth in the village.   “We need sane growth and businesses to expand the tax basis, “ Neuman said.

Neuman is also concerned about the future of the New York Military Academy property and foresees the possibility that it will be purchased by people with ties to the Kiryas Joel community, a Hasidic village in Monroe.

He is very concerned about the weight of property taxes on local residents and questions why village taxpayers will have to pick up the additional burden created by the lowering of the Cornwall Yacht Club’s assessment earlier this year.

Neuman, who moved to the village from Cornwall, where he lived for nearly 30 years,  is known to many and is a frequent presence at public meetings.  He recently took legal action to force a neighbor who lives below him to top off trees that blocked his view of the Hudson River—offering to pay for it himself.

Neuman also has a strong sense of community involvement. He serves on the Board of St. Luke’s Cornwall hospital and is a volunteer at the soup kitchen at St. Patrick’s Church in Newburgh.

One thing for sure about the future candidate, he has strong opinions and is upfront about his beliefs.  “What you see is what you get,” he said confidently.

Thank God!!! I was hoping someone intelligent with a voice of reason would run for office. You have my vote.

We shall see. Intelligence and reason are not absolutes.
