You could describe a parade simply as the passing of marching bands, twirling batons, and carefully handcrafted floats.

But on the Fourth of July in Cornwall, the parade is a reflection of the community, a passing snapshot of the people and the places that have shaped our lives during the past year.

If you are a family, chances are good that you and your children have been inside the dance studios whose students perform their best in parade. The gyms and ball fields have produced young athletes whose prowess is cheered today. Remember the great high school drama club production of Grease this season, or a Spring Concert at the middle school? The students were back again on the parade route, celebrating their accomplishments on stage.

The churches, where we worship God and find community, were well represented in this year's procession, from the Knights of Columbus to historic St. John Episcopal Church that is this year celebrating an anniversary.

The fire departments, the ambulances, whose sirens we hear nearly every day, and the military forces that protect us both here and abroad marched in step. Politicians who we may see grappling with local issues at town and village meetings all stepped out to greet the people on this Independence Day.

The parade, of course, would suffer, if musicians didn't provide a quick marching beat. So, the antique cars, boy scouts, and soldiers were interspersed with a number of bands. Patriotic tunes, old Scottish airs, it didn't matter, the music provided the beat that kept the parade moving along.

With a nod or two at our forebears, the costumed Revolutionary War and the Civil War characters tapped out the tunes of their times. The future, too, passed before us, in the form of a sleek solar car.

The Fourth of July parade may seem to pass quickly but it leaves a peaceful feeling in its wake, a sense that every float, every person who took part in it, is a vital piece of a place we call home, Cornwall.
