General News: Police Charge Woman in Skateboarding Incident

July 03, 2008

Police in Cornwall arrested a 49-year-old Brooklyn woman on Saturday after she allegedly drove slowly down Route 9W to allow her son and his friends to skateboard on the state highway.

Cornwall police chief Todd Hazard said it was amazing that anyone would attempt to skateboard on the roadway given the amount of traffic.  “Even more mind boggling,”  Hazard said in a press release, “is that a parent would not only condone this but participate in this action.”

According to Hazard, Virginia Schmitt put on her hazard lights and drove behind her 15-year-old son and his two teenage friends on the travel lane of the highway shortly after noon on June 28.

Officers responding to the scene stopped the group and arrested Schmitt and the youths.  Hazard said that Schmitt told the officers she was following the boys so they wouldn’t get hit by a vehicle while out riding.

Schmitt was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, a class A misdemeanor, and with disorderly conduct, for impeding the flow of traffic on a state highway.

The three teens, a15-year-old, a 16-year-old from Port Washington, and 19-year-old Patrick Schep, of Hoboken, N.J., were also charged with disorderly conduct.
