General News: Student Charged with Throwing Flare in High School
June 07, 2007
A 17-year-old male student at Cornwall Central High School has been charged with two felonies and a misdemeanor for his alleged role in activating a marine signal flare inside the high school. The canister spewed heavy smoke throughout the building, which was evacuated by all students and teachers early Thursday afternoon.
Cornwall police chief Todd Hazard said in a press release that after the incident occurred, school officials reviewed security films and identified a suspect, who admitted his role in igniting the signal flare.
Students remained outside while fire and police officials investigated the case, then were allowed to re-enter the building but were required to stay in the school auditorium until dismissal time.
The unidentified youth was charged with falsely reporting an incident, third degree criminal mischief, and reckless endangerment. He was held pending arraignment.
