A major water leak has forced the town of Cornwall recreation department to close the public pool just two days after it opened.

Town of Cornwall recreation department head Jim Kent said that the pool's water level had gone down 18 inches since it was filled last week. The pool opened to the public on Saturday, June 28.

The Cornwall town board will hold a special meeting on Monday at 7 p.m. to discuss how they are going to fix the problem. The meeting is open to the public.

Both the town and village's summer playground programs rely extensively on the pool, with groups of children from each program using the facility almost every day. In addition, many people have purchased summer passes to the pool.

Jim Kent notes that the pool dates back to the early 1950s when it was built for the town by Ralph Ogden, the owner of Star Expansion and the founder of the Storm King Art Center.

Comments:

Yes, I agree completely. You should have seen these town board people at the meeting I just got back from. The basic underlying message was that a town pool is a "luxury" that (and I'm qouting Quigley here) "not all municipalities have." I wish he could have told me that before I wrote my $125 check.

You have my vote! I don't use the pool however, don't tell me its a luxury! What are the children suppose to do in the heat of the summer! Our children enjoyed that pool in their days and camp would have been unbearable without looking forward to pool day. For the taxes we pay in this town we should have a pool that is not only clean but functions! Get with it Quigley!
