General News: Library Awarded Humanities Books

Cornwall Public Library has been awarded the 2008 We the People “Created Equal” Bookshelf, a set of 17 classic books on the theme of “Created Equal”, from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Additionally, the library received four of these books in Spanish translation, the “History in a Box” resource kit on Abraham Lincoln created by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, and supplementary programming materials including bookplates, bookmarks, and posters. 3,000 total Bookshelf awards were made nationally – up from 2,000 the previous year.
Each book has been chosen to engage young readers, as well as their parents and teachers, and to help young people learn more about events, people, places, and ideas in American history. The value of the Bookshelf collection is over $300 and it is broken out into 4 categories based on appropriate grade level of the reader.

The Bookshelf program is part of the Endowment’s We the People initiative, which supports projects that strengthen the teaching, study, and understanding of American history and culture. President George W. Bush launched We the People on Constitution Day, 2002, and NEH has received special appropriations from Congress for the initiative since 2003.
For Fall 2008, the library is planning a series of activities and events around this special collection of classic books that will include a “re-enactment” of one of the stories in play form, to be written and produced by a local scholar and professional.
