You could tend this lovely garden for a week |
June 06, 2007
Have you ever walked by a carefully tended vegetable garden with lovely greens planted in neat rows and wished that you could be part of that garden?
Well, now’s your chance. The organic vegetable garden at the high school is looking for a few volunteers to take care of it during the summer.
The garden, overseen by environmental science teacher Susan Mitchell, involves her students in planting, weeding, and harvesting a variety of vegetables. Once harvested, the food is sold to the school cafeteria and given to food pantries.
Individuals or families can sign up for one-week intervals, which will become “your week” to weed and harvest in the garden. This is a great way to connect with the earth, share new vegetables with your children, and become a part of this outstanding endeavor.
Duties also include delivering vegetables to the food pantry at Solid Rock Church in New Windsor on Monday afternoons. One meeting will be held in mid-June at the garden to train all volunteers. If you are interested, please call or email Susan Mitchell, Project Director, at [email protected] or 534-8009 x5000.
