An Eagle Scout Court of Honor was held on Sunday, June 22, at the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church in Cornwall to honor Cornwall Boy Scout Troop 118’s newest Eagle Scouts, Daniel Grodence-Hastey and Thomas J. Riley, III.

Assemblywoman Nancy Calhoun, Orange County Sheriff Carl Dubois, County Legislator Chris Eachus, Town of Cornwall Supervisor Kevin Quigley, and Village of Cornwall on Hudson Mayor Joe Gross were in attendance and made presentations to each of the Eagle Scouts.

Congratulatory messages were received from President and Mrs. Bush, Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton and Charles Schumer, Congressman John Hall, Governor David Patterson, State Senator William Larkin and County Executive Edward Diana.

Dan is the son of the Andy Grodence and Robin Hastey of Cornwall on Hudson. He is a senior at Cornwall Central High School. Dan has served Troop 118 as an Assistant Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Senior Patrol Leader and Junior Assistant Scoutmaster. He is currently an Assistant Scoutmaster.

For his Eagle Scout Service Project, Dan established a scenic recreational area in the village of Cornwall-on-Hudson. He cleared Clark Street, an abandoned road that runs parallel to Dock Hill Road, and created a walking trail. After completing the main trail, he cleared a smaller side trail leading to the site of a proposed bridge to be constructed at a future date

Tom is the son of Tom and Julie Riley of Newburgh. He is a junior at Fordham Prep. Tom has served Troop 118 as an Assistant Patrol Leader and Patrol Leader and is currently an Assistant Senior Patrol Leader. For his Eagle Scout Service Project, Tom built a raised garden area and a path in an empty lot to help beautify the site of Safe Harbors which operates the Cornerstone residence on Broadway and provides low-income housing for the homeless and the needy in the City of Newburgh.

For every 100 boys who join a Boy Scout troop:

* Twelve will have their first contact with a church or synagogue.
* Five will earn their religious emblem.
* Three will enter the clergy or a religious vocation.
* Eighteen will develop hobbies that will last through their adult life.
* Eight will enter a career that was learned through the merit badge system.
* One will use his Scout skills to save the life of another.
* Two will use their Scout skills to save their own life.
* Twenty-one will become adult Scouting volunteers.
* Three will become Eagle Scouts.

To achieve the rank of Eagle, a Scout must earn a total of 21 merit badges. Additionally, while a Life Scout, the Eagle candidate must plan, develop, and give leadership to others in a service project helpful to any organization outside of Scouting. The project must be approved by the Scoutmaster, the troop’s committee, and by the local Council or District.
