General News: Village Votes to Study Police Consolidation

June 16, 2008

The village board took a step toward consolidation of its police department with the town of Cornwall department at its meeting Monday night.

The trustees approved a resolution calling for the village to request a study by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services into the benefits having only one police department to serve both the village and town.  That goal could be achieved through consolidation, merging or dissolving one department.

The request for the study, however, cannot be made unless the town of Cornwall agrees to sign it, too.  Town supervisor Kevin Quigley says he wants to sit down with Mayor Gross and one of his board members to discuss the idea of consolidation before they go to the state.

“I’d like to see what’s on their minds,”  Quigley said, adding that he isn’t necessarily in favor of the move. “There’s no advantage for the town to take it.  What would be the purpose?”

Comments:

So there's no advantage? Well are there any disadvantages? I think requesting a study is the minimum that should be done in order to make an educated decision. It's time Cornwall and Cornwall-on-Hudson stop being rivals and try working together on what is best for the residents instead of trying to outdo each other. I learned about this neverending competition back in elementary school from Janet Dempsey and thought it to be ridiculous even then.
