The true meaning of Memorial Day was brought to life at the soldiers monument near Cornwall Town Hall Monday morning as veterans, politicians, and police and fire departments paid tribute to members of the armed forces.
A crowd of a couple of hundred people listened as town supervisor Dick Randazzo spoke of the rise in patriotism that he saw along the parade route earlier that day. “More children than ever were holding the flag and waving the flag,” he noted.
New village mayor Joe Gross spoke of his father’s recent death in a veteran’s hospital and he called on those present not to forget the needs of all returning veterans.
The superintendent of the New York Military Academy , Robert Watts, told the crowd that many towns no longer honor the meaning of Memorial Day. “Cornwall is a town that remembers its fallen heroes,” he said. After he spoke, the New York Military Academy band played a medley of military tunes.
Remembrance of the fallen veterans in Cornwall continued with the laying of ceremonial wreathes by representatives of the local fire departments, police departments, COVAC, the American Legion, Knights of Columbus, and historical society.
The NYMA rifle squad then released three ceremonial shots and a solemn playing of taps allowed those present to reflect on the meaning of duty and sacrifice this Memorial Day.
