Local officials joined leaders of the St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital and more than 100 members of the community at large on Friday afternoon in a groundbreaking ceremony for a new cancer care center at the Cornwall campus of the hospital.

The $17 million construction project will include a 20,000 square foot two-story building where patients will be able to access radiation oncology and chemotherapy services on an out-patient basis.

Hospital president and CEO Allan Atzrott spoke of the “long arduous process” of financing and winning approval for the plans to build the cancer center, which happened over six years.  “People need to have these services close to home,”  Atzrott told the crowd, “It’s been a worthwhile six years.”

Atzrott also thanked state senator Bill Larkin for a recent grant of $500,000 for the cancer center.   He noted that the new center will be built with all union labor from Orange County.

Orange County Executive Ed Diana praised the benefit of having the cancer center in Cornwall.  “You made a decision to keep local hospitals local, where they’ve been for many, many years, and not move out,” he said.

The cancer care center will connect via a walkway to the main hospital on Laurel Avenue.  It also will include expanded parking for an additional 91 cars.

The new treatment center will sit in front of the current hospital and construction is expected to be completed by late 2009.
