General News: Parking On River Avenue Still Under Review

Ray Yannone spoke about parking concerns
Ray Yannone spoke about parking concerns
May 23, 2007

The new outdoor eating area at The River Bank restaurant and its impact on parking was the focus of further discussion at this week’s meeting of the village board of trustees.

The mayor and trustees heard from Ray Yannone, the owner of the building next door to The River Bank, who spoke about the lack of parking for patrons of Nicky’s restaurant and adjoining ice cream parlor that occupy the ground floor of his building.

Yannone expressed his disappointment about the process that led to the approval of a plan eliminating at least one parking spot outside his property. “I was confused and somewhat upset,” he said, referring to his reaction to the construction going on next door. “There had always been a decent review policy for neighbors to have some input. “ Yannone added that is was “a slap in the face that this had happened.”

The trustees responded to Yannone’s concerns and those of Nicky Corea, owner of Nicky’s restaurant who also spoke to the board. Trustee Mark Edsall said that the parking plan was premised on a net increase of eight parking spaces in the lot on River Avenue that is part of the agreement that allowed The River Bank to create its outdoor patio.

Tony Missere, owner of The River Bank, has agreed to build a new parking lot on village property down the road from the restaurant. At the meeting, Missere also told Yannone that he is ready to do whatever is necessary to ensure parking for the neighboring ice cream parlor and restaurant.

Board members also considered adding restrictions to the use of the restaurant’s outdoor eating area that would reflect the concerns of the village planning board. No final decision was made regarding the restrictions, which include limiting hours when food can be served on the patio and use of music. The board is expected to address these issues in June.

The board also discussed moving ahead with a proposal to hire a consultant to study traffic flow and parking in the village business district in order to integrate the plans for the new parking area with proposals to reduce traffic problems in the area of the elementary school.

Comments:

All this hoopla over 2 parking spaces when the municipal lot ALWAYS.... and I stress ALWAYS has ample parking? Nickys patrons have all the street parking AND a parking lot across the street AND the municipal lot and the ice cream place is mostly a walk up business with tons of ample parking for those who don't walk there!!
I think there needs to be much more meaninful discussions amongst village patrons, residents and business owners than this issue.
C'mon C-O-H...let's get real here.
