The sacrifice of the men and women who have served in the U.S. military was the focus on Monday’s Memorial Day remembrance at the town monument. It was also a reminder that in our often hectic lives we fail to appreciate the sacrifices of those who gave their lives to defend America’s way of life.

“Who has it better than us?” county legislator Alan Seidman asked the crowd. “Remember those who protect our freedom.”

Town supervisor Kevin Quigley spoke of his own father’s service in World War II. An immigrant from Ireland in 1938, Quigley’s father soon found himself serving his new country overseas. “We owe those who fought a debt of gratitude,” he said.

Village mayor Joe Gross told those assembled on the lawn of town hall about the simple sandstone boulder that serves as the World War One monument on Hudson Street and urged people not to forget about the men whose names are listed there as we hurry about our lives.

Former American Legion Post 353 commander Tom Quinlan described how he and other volunteers had put up some 600 flags at the gravesides of former service members. “It’s a piece of this community’s fabric,” Quinlan remarked, “You’re all part of that fabric.”

Dominick Forte, of the American Legion Post, served as the master of ceremonies. He also spoke of this ongoing service of local residents who are serving today in Iraq.

The New York Military Academy band played a newly-composed song, “Purple Hearted Heroes,” a slow, melancholic tune that seemed fitting for the day.

Each of the three fire companies presented wreaths, followed by the historical society, the American Legion Post 353, NYMA and COVAC.

A 21-gun salute by NYMA cadets split the air and left a ringing silence that was filled by the sounds of taps played by Abby Mayer.
