The woodland trails and wildflower meadows of Kenridge Farm will be abuzz with activity on Saturday, May 19, when the first Hike-a-thon gets underway on the Museum of the Hudson Highlands property.

Visitors to the farm will also be able to buy some of the native wildflowers that will be available for sale during the day.

The opening of the trails on the 177-acre farm nestled beneath Black Rock Mountain marks the culmination of a four-year effort, according to the museum’s executive director, Jackie Grant. Grant recounts how Bob McCormick, a member of the board of directors, built the trails with the help of three landscape design students. A half-dozen local students cleared the trails and put in barrier to limit erosion, she said.

The museum created the Hike-a-thon as a way of introducing the public to the new trails while raising fund for the many nature education programs held there. Hikers will be able to go as far as three miles on the trails, or if a gentle walk is preferred, short walking trails are also available.

Museum educators will be out on the trail, offering insight into the natural beauty of the forest and woodland.

At the wildflower sale, master gardeners will be on hand to offer gardeners ideas and advise on growing plants native to our environment, plants like joe pye weed and wild bergamont. For those interested in creating a nutrient-rich supplement for gardens, the museum is offering red wiggler worms, complete with instructions on how to use them to turn kitchen scraps into compost.

The museum welcomes hikers from throughout the area who would like to explore the trails and raise money with their steps. Walden Savings Bank, Jacobowitz & Gubits, and Time-Warner Cable have already sponsored the start up of this outdoor adventure at Kenridge. Farm.
