General News: Water Dept. Project Won't Stop Memorial

The water department had to do some problem-solving this week as it pushes ahead with its installation of a new pressure valve chamber at Chadeayne Circle.

The chamber, which went into the ground near Canterbury creek last week, had a concrete extension that rose some four feet above surface level in an area where the town of Cornwall plans to expand a memorial park.

Cornwall-on-Hudson water department superintendent Bob June came up with the idea of cutting the extension off and moving it the side of the chamber. The extension allows for entry into the vault. He hired a specialist who sawed off the top on Wednesday using a diamond-tipped blade.

Cornwall town board members were concerned about the protruding tower when it first went in because they planned to order a granite monument honoring all of the local emergency services units that responded to the 9-11 disaster that would be erected in a newly-landscaped park at the traffic circle. The project was started by former town supervisor Richard Randazzo and the town expects to dedicate the new monument in September of this year.
