General News: Officers Enforce Seat Belt Law

If you think you’ve seen a lot more police in the village of Cornwall-on-Hudson this week, you’re right.

The police handed out 86 traffic tickets in four days from Sunday through Wednesday – 54 of them to drivers or passengers who were not buckled up.   In the entire month of April, 72 traffic tickets were issued by the department.

Cornwall-on-Hudson police chief Charles Williams says the surge in ticket writing is part of a state-funded Buckle Up New York program held twice a year.    The program pays for more officers on the street to check that all front seat passengers and rear passengers under the age of 16 have their belts fastened.

While his officers are on the lookout for seat belt law violators, they have also caught a number of other violations, including nine uninspected vehicles, four people driving with suspended licenses and four speeders.

Cornwall police chief Todd Hazard says that town officers have not yet started their seatbelt enforcement campaign – although plans are underway for it to start in the coming days.
