Cornwall United's Celina Carrero on the attack
Cornwall United's Celina Carrero on the attack
April 30, 2008

The results from the Cornwall United soccer teams games on April 27.

U9 GIRLS
Cornwall United’s U9 girls lost their first game of the spring season to the Warwick Ravens 3-1.  Despite controlling the ball for most of the game, and having many opportunities to score, the Scorpions just could not find the back of the net. Cornwall’s lone goal was scored by Olivia Davet on a beautiful pass from Monika Morasse.  Sam Incognoli and Hannah Cast played great defense, and stopped many attacks by the Ravens.

U10 GIRLS
The U10 Cheetahs opened their season with a disappointing loss to the Yorktown Dragons 4 – 1. The lone score for the home team came from Lilian Poling. Leanne Casey and Jessica Dwyer played well in goal but could not overcome the Dragon’s pressure offense. Ava Carter, Maddie Lander, Kaitlyn Preiss and Katarina VanLedtje were defensive stalwarts. While Jillian Decker, Sam Nelbach, Giovanna Fichera and Lauren Pinkham did their best to penetrate the opponent’s defense. Jillian Larson, Micah Wojehowski and Emma Sabini substituted on both offense and defense creating opportunities for the Cheetahs that just came up short.

U11 GIRLS
It was a very close game between the CU Predators and the Shrub Oak Blazers with the Predators losing 2-1.  Mary Gallo, Emily Gallo & Erin Leahy played an excellent offensive game.  Fiona Durkin played extremely well and scored the Predators only goal on a penalty kick.  Johanna Caufaglione, Adrianna Pean & Kelly Moran played strong defense with big kicks by Mariah Hernandez. Overall a well played game by the newly formed Predators.

U12 GIRLS- DRAGONFIRE
Cornwall United Dragonfire defeated the Carmel Shooting Stars by a score of 3-0.
An early goal by Caroline Staudle started the momentum for Dragonfire.  Erin Hussey assisted Caroline on the first goal and played hard on defense as she pushed the ball down field for Cornwall.  Laura Craig and Renee Briggs maintained the defense shutting out any attempts by Carmel.  Lexci Modlinski scored a second half goal for Cornwall on a cross from Caroline Staudle and Jillian Artrip chipped one in on a corner kick from Kamryn Brown.  Cathy Eliason was busy in goal catching eleven saves on the day.

U14 GIRLS
The Cornwall United U14G Sabres went to Cortlandt Sunday to play the team at the top of the standings.  The team standing at the top at the end of the match was the Sabres.  The girls dominated play with a 2-0 victory.  Celina Carerro tallied the two scores with support from the entire Sabres team.  Gabby Chamberland extends her shutout streak to 7 matches.  Kristen Condosta and Evelyn Cohn shared the praise of the coaching staff for their aggressive play on defense.

U9 BOYS
The U9 Rangers fell to the Cortlandt Cobras 3-1 in a hard fought, well played match. Brian Flannery provided most of the offensive threat for the Rangers using his speed to beat the Cobras defense on at least half a dozen runs.  His hard work paid off when he dribbled by three defenders and then passed to an open Conor St. Germain who one timed the ball into the back of the net.  Joseph Maloney showed great promise in the midfield possessing the ball well under pressure.  Matt Cartoon had an excellent game in goal the first half.

U10 BOYS
The U10 Rovers lost a close match to the Carmel Raptors 3 to 2.  Salatiel Carino led the offense with a dozen close attempts throughout the game before getting the Rovers first goal of the match after a scramble for the ball in front of the net.  The Rovers second goal came from Aiden O’Keefe who beat the keeper on a curving shot to the far post from outside the box.  Kieran McVan had another excellent game dominating the midfield and out hustling the Raptors throughout the game.  The defense was led by Raffaele Aversa at center back and David Schuyler in goal.

U12 BOYS
The Dragons 96 lost to the Poughkeepsie Flames by a score of 4-1.
Although they were down two players, the Dragons fought aggressively against a tough opponent.  Tyler Spagnoli scored the goal in the second half with an assist by Damon Neil.  Andrew Stein controlled the midfield while Ryan Mellino led the defense.  Great all-around hustle by Artem Ryabov.

U15 BOYS
The Titans and the Florida Pheonix played to a 1-1 tie. Ruben Mazza scored the lone goal in another 9 vs. 11 battle.  The boys played extremely well despite the fact that they failed to have a full squad again!  Coach Powell indicated he was quite proud of their effort as a team and ability to control some flow of the game all the while having no subs and playing down two men!

U18 BOYS
The Cosmos won their first game of the season thanks to two goals from Carl Kumpel and one from Anthony Rizzi. Assists were provided by Joe LaGrutta. Mike O'Connor, Dylan Lowry and Andy Reslewic controlled the tempo of the game and were strong defensively. Tim Brennan and Nick Stadler provided strong defensive play on the outsides, while Matt Fitzpatrick and Alex Jebb
worked tirelessly on both sides of the ball.  Josh Madell helped Mike Schaeffer keep the LaGrange offense at bay for long periods. It was an evenly contested game played in a physical but sporting manner.
