The history of the Storm King Fire Engine Company #2 has been memorialized for generations to come in two beautiful bronze plaques unveiled on Saturday.

Fire company member Bob Gosda, who undertook the effort to create the plaques, welcomed the small crowd outside the firehouse.

After a prayer from Pastor Dan Russell, of the Cornwall Presbyterian Church,  fire chief Jeff Armitage welcomed guests and thanked everyone for their efforts. Mayor Joe Gross also spoke a few words to the crowd.

Maryanne Rose, the president of the Cornwall Historical Society, presented Gosda with a fire hose nozzle that she said had been donated to the society but, she said, when the society researched it, discovered that the nozzle really belonged to the fire company.

The group then moved over to 20 Duncan Avenue, the site of the village’s first firehouse in what is now a private house to unveil the first of two plaques.  The plaque had a sketch of  the building and a description of the company’s founding.

Village historian Collette Fulton spoke about the efforts of John Oliver, a fireman from New York City who settled here and built the firehouse with his son in 1869.

The group returned to the firehouse for the unveiling of the second plaque, which describes the founding of the new building in 1903.   Town historian Janet Dempsey spoke of the official opening of the structure, which was built by George Stevenson.

After a ceremony, visitors had refreshments and visited the firehouse museum that was open for this event.

Next time you are walking by either plaque, take a moment to read the inscriptions that chronicle the founding of a village institution, Storm King Fire Engine Company #2.
