General News: Picture Perfect Photo Shoot at Riverfront

April 21, 2008

The first public challenge to the group use policy at Donahue Memorial Park at the riverfront had a happy ending on Saturday.

Last week, Cornwall residents Charles and Linda Muller came to the village trustee meeting to protest the village’s charge of $250 to reserve the riverfront park gazebo to take photographs of her daughter’s wedding party.

The couple decided to take their chances on finding a scenic location in the park without paying a fee.  The discussion of their situation led more than a dozen people to question the group use policy in online comments here. (see story and comments) cornwall-on-hudson.com/news.cfm?page=2227

On Sunday, Linda Muller wrote that the photo shoot went off without a problem. “I am pleased to announce that our daughter Jessica Muller married the love of her life, Anthony Mariani on Saturday,” she wrote. “Fisherman and others using the gazebo were more than happy to move for us. In fact, all congratulated the happy couple and stayed to see the photo shoot.”

Village mayor Joe Gross defended the group use policy on Monday, saying that the fees will be used to maintain Donahue Memorial park.

Comments:

Glad to see all worked out for the Muller's. However, I do believe that there has to be some sort of regulations. Just today on my way home from work I observed what appeared to be a family of four on their way to the riverfront to do a little fishing. It was very obvious that the family was not from the area. They were standing on private property on Shore Road taking a picture of themselves using the private property as the backdrop as another member of the group parked the vehicle midway up Wood Avenue so as to avoid parking at the riverfront and the need for purchasing a parking permit. There has to be some regulations so as to keep things from getting out of hand. I am not saying we should limit the use of the riverfront to any particular group or to just residents. But we must maintain the beauty of the park by being able to enforce local laws. If we do not include group use fee's what is to stop a professional photographer from setting up shop down there and using the park as their own back drop to make money and not pay for the maintenance of the park except for the purchase of a parking permit. Remember, not all laws are perfect the first time that they are written. In fact they get changed many times and the police who enforce those laws have a broad use of discretion while enforcing the laws just like giving a warning for a DMV infraction as opposed to writing a summons. The group use fee schedule is obviously a work in progress.

"It was very obvious that the family was not from the area" It was? How was it "obvious"? I hope that you mean they had out-of-state plates, and not that they "just didn't look right."

Boothby171 - Bottom line if they were from the area or not they were still on private property trespassing in front of a posted "No respassing' sign.

Perhaps the village and town would consider the use of the park(s), pool, summer playground to be a "benefit" to our local men and women who faithfully serve our communities as volunteers in the Fire and Ambulance corps?
