t’s spring and time to think about gardening and plants. Need some geraniums to brighten up the front porch? Or how about adding new perennials to fill in where Bambi and friends have nibbled? And wouldn’t Mom love a plant for Mother’s Day? The Cornwall Garden Club will have them all at the club’s annual plant sale on Saturday, May 12, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Sands Ring Homestead across from the Cornwall Town Hall.

According to Jayne Petersen, co-chairperson for the plant sale, deer resistant plants will be a special attraction at this year’s sale. “We’ve selected plants that Garden Club members have had success with in discouraging browsing. In addition we are featuring a variety of herbs and great ideas for using herbs in your cooking, home and garden. Herbs, too, are deer resistant,” said Petersen.

Another highlight of the sale is the numerous plants suitable as Mother’s Day gifts. “We’ll have a great selection of hanging baskets and containers,” said Sally Mattausch, the sale’s other co-chairperson. “And children can get free gift wrapping for that special something for Mom,” she added.

Other traditional features of the plant sale include annuals, perennials, vegetables, the baked goods table with homemade treats and Grandma’s Attic with its eclectic assortment of bric-a-brac.

The plant sale is the only fund raising event conducted by the Cornwall Garden Club. Income from the sale funds community projects such as the plantings at the bandstand, the traffic circle and Munger Cottage and the trees planted on Arbor Day. Those interested in joining or learning more about the Cornwall Garden Club are invited to stop by the information booth at the plant sale.
