Celebrate Earth Day
April 17, 2008

Trees bursting into bud. Birds busy building their nests. Daffodils breaking up the grey landscape of winter. All the signs of new life present a perfect setting for celebrating Earth Day 2008.

Nature lovers throughout Cornwall will find many opportunities to celebrate and do their part to preserve the beauty of the area during the next ten days. Here’s a look at what’s in store:

Tree dedication at Cornwall-on-Hudson Elementary School. A tree replacement dedication will take place by the school sign in the front yard of Cornwall-on-Hudson Elementary School on Friday, April 18th, at 2:30 PM. Sally Faith Dorfman, on behalf of her parents and family, will present the tree in memory of the children who lost their lives at the day care center during the Oklahoma City bombing.

Black Rock Forest Tree Planting.
The scientists at the Black Rock Science Center really know their trees. One concern they have is the threat to canopy trees such as the red oak (quercus rubra). That’s why they are inviting the public to help plant advanced-stage, local-source red oak seedlings into a one-acre opening in the forest that has not yet regenerated naturally. They need help moving seedlings, digging holes, planting trees, watering trees, and completing a deer-exclusion fence. Bring work gloves and wear sturdy boots and field clothes and we will supply all the materials.
Meet at the main forest entrance across Rt. 9W from the Storm King School between 9 and 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 19.

“Yes, In My Backyard.
” Come celebrate our planet during a weekend of activities at the Wildlife Education Center of the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum! On both Saturday and Sunday exhibits will help you learn about green living, and what you can do at home in your own backyard to reduce carbon emissions, conserve resources, and protect habitats and wildlife. Enjoy the music of pre-k children who will be singing songs for Earth Day on Saturday at 11:30a.m.

Throughout the weekend, experience activities that teach environmental stewardship. Make crafts from recycled products, take a guided trail hike and explore the biodiversity of our earth by visiting live animals.

Earth Day Celebrations exhibits include: Organic Gardening and Composting, Landscaping with Native Plants, Resource Conservation, Energy Alternatives, Tote bag craft for kids on Saturday sponsored by Sportsplex. Toad Abode Craft for Kids on Sunday. The Dierdre Imus Foundation will provide sample-cleaning products. Taylor Recycling also sponsored the stewardship events.

Xeriscaping.
Yes, it’s a big word, but it means planting gardens that tolerate low-water conditions and drought. Join the Cornwall Garden Club at the public library for this Earth Day event.

Arbor Day. Tree lovers emerge again on Friday for a celebration of Arbor Day. That’s when the Cornwall Garden Club, in coordination with the Town of Cornwall Conservation Advisory Council, marks the planting of more maple trees along the drive leading to the American Legion Post, creating a gentle allee of maples. Don’t miss Abby Mayer on alphorn. You’ll think you’re in the Swiss Alps.

Great Hudson River Sweep.
And, if you’ve been inspired by your efforts during the week, pick up some trash bags and head down to the Hudson River with friends and family. It’s a beautiful place to spend at least part of your day.

Bear Mountain Trailside Museum and Zoo.
Musicians perform throughout the day in the newly refurbished outdoor amphitheater at the park while visitors can learn about how to reduce their carbon footprint. The organizers say it will be a time to celebrate Earth Day at the Nation's first Zoo, nature and history museum complex rolled into one, and enjoy our history, the animals, and Mother Nature renewed once again.
