General News: Cornwall United Soccer Week 2

April 15, 2008

U 11 Girls
On opening day for the newly formed Predators, the team played a great game dominating possession of the ball despite losing to Southern Ulster Cougars 4-0. Mary Gallo had a great performance in the second half as goalie, with 3 stunning saves, shutting down the opponent’s offense. Mariah Hernandez had a spectacular defensive game while Erin Leahy, Erin Geraghty, and Fiona Durkin controlled the ball with solid midfield play.

U12 Girls
In their first game of the Spring Season, the Dragon Claws took on the Orange County Express. It was a hard-fought game, with each side taking turns dominating. Cornwall had several offensive surges lead by Victoria Colotti, Amanda Sarchino and Olivia Tellefsen, but they were turned away by a tough Express defense.  OC Express came charging back, only to be swept aside by Cornwall defenders Ileana LaGrutta and Krissy McGonnigle.  Rebecca Baumel played a very aggressive defense in goal for the Dragon Claws.  When the final whistle blew, the score was 0-0; a fitting end for a game between two well-matched teams

U14 Girls
The Cornwall United Sabres U14 Girls shut out the Cortlandt Vipers 4-0 in dominating fashion.  Goalkeeper Gabby Chamberland recorded her 7th consecutive shutout aided by her steadfast defense of Kayla Brewer, Ally LaGrutta, Evelyn Cohen and Kristen Condosta.  The Sabres held the Vipers to three shots, while the offense connected with the net 4 times.  Sabres Captain Celina Carrero blasted the first goal of the season from the top of the 18 early, followed by her second goal only a few minutes later.  Alejandra Cordero slashed her way into the box and drilled a goal home early in the second half.  The scoring was complete when Carly Tice stormed the back post and scored off a deflection by the Viper goalie.  The story of the game was the dominant Sabres midfield play.  Starters Briana Stadler, Alejandra Cordero, Andrea Mancuso and Melissa Mariani controlled the ball and pace of the match.  Victoria Dewsnap, Amanda Fasano, Hallie Bell and Allison Sarchino equally contributed in midfield to keep possession of the ball, set up the numerous Sabres scoring chances and thwart the Vipers attack.  The offensive pressure never let up as Miranda Antinucci and Tiffany Herrera peppered shots on goal.  Teamwork, intensity and soccer skill were on display for all in attendance.

U9 Boys
The Rangers first game played to a 1-1 tie against the Hyde Park Pythons. The boys played a very offensive- minded game from the kick off, controlling the ball and tempo of the game.  The Rangers took plenty of shots before Brian Flannery was able to score with an assist from Cameron Dunn. Max Cameron led the way on defense, controlling the ball and starting many of the offensive threats.

U12 Boys
The Dragons 96 team tied the Washingtonville Raptors 1-1. The Dragons fought hard to challenge every ball and won control of the second half.  Tyler Spagnoli scored the goal and Eduardo Bello made key saves in goal.  Strong midfield play was led by Damon Neil and backed by Ian Barnes and Michael Vecchio.  Awesome defense and good communication rounded out a well-played game.

U13 Boys
The U13Cobras came from behind to beat Rhinebeck 3-2. The Cobras opened the game with an uneven and disappointing start.  Although they carried the action, the Cobras still entered the half down 2-0 on a pair of ugly and unnecessary goals. The second half provided some redemption as the Cobras roared back with three unanswered goals to take the win. Jake Ross, AJ Mpasiakos, and Joe Valle finished the job on offense while Abe Silfen and Edmond Myers were particularly strong on defense.

U 15 Boys
The newly formed U 15 boys team, the Titans, played to a 0-0 tie against FC Somers.

For the second week in a row, the team was faced with the battle of competing with only 8 players versus their 11.Although they were down three players with no subs the entire game, the Titans controlled the ball most of the first half.  Mark Nicosia had several threats at goal resulting in brilliant plays through the middle from AJ Imperial-Rogers and Ruben Mazza.  Ruben's and Tim Rera's stamina were challenged by having to play offense and defense the entire 90 minutes at the difficult outside midfield positions. Outside defenders Max Delacruz and David Waters again proved that they can hang with the big boys by positioning themselves extremely well while taking the responsibilities of marking more than one player at all times successfully!

With energy dwindling in the second half, the team could not thank our security / insurance / larger than life Anthony Cavazza.  His center defensive abilities were extremely frustrating to the opposition and his talent to strike the moment the offense looked down was uncanny.  Goalie John Foody had several heart stopping plays that would have been on the top 10 plays of the week on ESPN Sports Center.
