Cornwall residents and visitors have a great opportunity during the next six weeks to view the work of noted classic painter Andrew Lattimore and his students from the studio atelier he runs here in town.

The Culture in Cornwall Committee is presenting an exhibit of Lattimore’s work along with that of his students – more than 60 paintings and drawings featuring the work of 23 artists.

Andrew Lattimore spoke recently about the work. “It’s an extraordinary show,” he said of the exhibit that is hanging now in Cornwall Town Hall and opens with a reception on Friday, April 18, from 3 to 4 p.m.

Lattimore, who has created portraits of famous figures like former New York Governor George Pataki, takes great pride in his atelier, where a range of students practice techniques in still life, landscape and portraiture.

“I try to promote family in my school,” Lattimore said. “People have varying degrees of accomplishments and I don’t want anyone to be intimidated.” He prods his students to find ways to challenge themselves artistically, he said.

For those in his human figure class, he encourages them to look at surface mechanics, to understand locomotion, perspective and proportion.

Lattimore praises the work of 14-year-old Danny Yurgel whose sketch of a human skull “blew him away” the first time they met. Several of Yurgel’s sketches are in the exhibit.

Many of the pieces on view in the exhibit are colorful landscapes and still lifes. Lattimore’s focus on technique is apparent in his students’ work. His own still life of fruit is spectacular.

“I encourage students to find the artist within,” Lattimore said, “ and I give them the tools to exploit that.”

Cornwall Town Hall is located at 183 Main Street in Cornwall and the exhibit is on the second-floor. It is open during business hours, M-F 8:30 – 4:30 p.m.
