A tall maple tree fell on top of a vehicle driven by Bronwen Riley, 28, as she drove on Hudson Street with her infant in the back seat this afternoon around 1:30 p.m.
Judy Mullarkey, who works at Market-on-Hudson, says a woman ran into the store panicking and yelled to her to call 911 because a tree had hit a car.
Police and DPW crews rushed to the scene to find the woman uninjured. An eyewitness, Lois Proulx, who lives near the fallen tree, said that Riley was unharmed although she said glass pieces had fallen on the woman’s infant in the back seat.
“A limb broke a side window and came inside,” Proulx said. “sending glass over the baby. Proulx said that the woman’s sunroof was open, which may have avoided more glass shattering on the roof.
Police chief Charles Williams said that when the woman arrived home she noticed a cut by the baby’s eye and called an ambulance to take the child to the hospital.
DPW crews got to work quickly to remove the maple tree that had fallen across Hudson Street. Proulx said she had noticed the tree had several dead branches and thought perhaps the recent rains had weakened its roots.
Hudson Street between Avenue A and Academy Avenue was closed for the better part of an hour as crews worked to remove the tree. Judy Mullarkey said the drop in business at the market was noticeable on an otherwise sunny afternoon.
