General News: Village Sets Up Email Notification System
April 27, 2007
Last week’s problems with the Cornwall-on-Hudson water system hammered home a message to village leaders: it’s time to establish a network to notify residents when there is significant information that could impact public safety.
After the water department determined that the water should be boiled before use, the village deployed members of the fire department who dropped off notices at homes throughout the day. That effort was impacted by the tremendous number of calls for assistance that came into the fire department as a result of the storm that had also caused the water problems.
At last week’s village board meeting, Mayor Joe Gross said they would look into how to alert people in emergency, noting that he was concerned about shouldering the cost of a telephone system commonly called reverse 911. In that system, in an emergency calls would go out to residents with a pre-recorded message.
It was decided to look into how to establish email contact with residents and today the village has taken the first step to that end. You can sign up today on the website to receive an alert from the village via email.
Village clerk Jeanne Mahoney says the email alert will be used to notify residents of road closures, water shut-offs, or emergency measures.
