General News: Electrical Outlet Sparks Fire
April 02, 2008
A malfunctioning electrical outlet started a fire at a home on Avenue A on Tuesday evening and quickly spread into the walls.
Storm King Fire Engine Co. #2 assistant fire chief Kurt Hahn says that the fire started in the outlet where a washing machine and a dryer were connected with an adapter. The dryer overheated and, Hahn, says, it likely caused arcing and sparks to ignite a blaze.
The 15-year-old grandson of homeowner James Scully noticed the smoke and grabbed a fire extinguisher. By the time firefighters arrived, Hahn said, the boy had knocked down some of the fire. It took another ten minutes to completely extinguish the blaze, which had spread up through the walls and overhead.
Hahn cautions that large electrical appliances like washers, dryers, and air conditioners need to be connected directly to outlets, not through adapters or extension cords that can lead to overloading and fires.and quickly spread into the walls.
