Affordable housing for working people is an issue that many people in Cornwall are concerned about – and their concern doesn’t stop at the borders of our town. Several local residents are active members of the Newburgh chapter of Habitat for Humanity, which is holding its annual Walk for Housing this Sunday.

Cornwall churches, including the Methodists and Episcopalians, have co-sponsored several of the 31 homes that have been built by Habitat in Newburgh since 2000. Members of he Cornwall Presbyterian Church helped to build the newest home at 202 South Street that was dedicated ten days ago.

The five-kilometer Walk for Housing will go past this home, along with 11 Habitat houses on the route. According to Jessica Sun, who is the development director of the local chapter, Habitat homes are clustered in specific neighborhoods where they can have the greatest impact.

Pastor Dan Russell of the Cornwall Presbyterian Church compares the Habitat homes to the parable of the mustard seed. "It starts out like a little seed," he says, "but it has a huge impact on Newburgh and on the individual families that are brought out of poverty houses and unjust situations."  His church has made Habitat a priority, providing $13,000 and numerous hours of volunteer labor for one project.

The walk, which begins at 1 p.m., will end at Downing Park where people will find fun, food, and live entertainment, including face painting, a massage station, activities for kids, and a magician.

Live music will be provided by several acts, including the Cornwall A Capella Choir and two Cornwall bands, Within the Walls and One Waye. Lizzie Parisi, 14, a Cornwall high school freshman, plays the bass in One Waye and her mother, Lynda, a filmmaker, is another Cornwall resident who found herself devoting hours of volunteer time to Habitat.

Parisi has made several short promotional videos for the group for free because she was so impressed by the staff and volunteers who, she says, are unbelievably talented and dedicated. “It is a well-run and efficient organization,” Parisi says. “They’ve served 31 families who were living in squalor who now have their own homes.”

Judith McLaughlin, a Cornwall-on-Hudson resident, serves on the group’s board of directors along with Neil Drislane, another village resident. Many more Cornwall residents volunteer their time and talents.

Development director Jessica Sun says that they expect more than 1,000 people to participate in this year’s Walk for Housing. Anyone wishing to join in this fund-raising event can register on Sunday starting at 12 noon in Newburgh’s Downing Park. Visit www.habitatnewburgh.org for more information.
