General News: School Board Restores Proposed Cuts
April 19, 2007
The Cornwall board of education has approved a new round of changes to the contingency budget that would take effect if the proposed budget is voted down in May. This time, school board members could re-instate programs that had been targeted last month, including popular sports and after-school programs.
The action was made possible by news from the state education department that one million dollars more of state aid could be used in a contingency budget than previously calculated. So, instead of having to make $1.28 million in contingency cuts, the board only had to cut $280, 000.
The items that now would be cut if the district was forced onto a contingency budget include equipment, overtime for buildings and grounds crews, an initiative to reduce high school class size, the arts in education program, transportation for athletes, and some custodial time in the cafeteria.
School board president Brendan Coyne, who presided over the contentious and often emotional debate over the first round of proposed cuts, said he is glad for the district that the contingency is not so difficult. “I’m sorry,” he added, “that we had to go through the contingency budget forum.”
