General News: Water Advisory Still in Effect
April 18, 2007
The boil water advisory is still in effect for customers of the Cornwall-on-Hudson water department and village clerk Jeanne Mahoney says that it will likely stay in effect until late Wednesday.
Mahoney says that the water department has to wait until the water has been tested for two days before it can lift the advisory. Samples have been sent regularly to the county for testing, Mahoney says, and, to date, no contamination of the water supply has been detected.
Concerned water department customers have been calling the village since the public was first alerted to the precautionary measure on Monday following the flooding of the well field in Mountainville. Village employees have been able to calm people’s fears. Only one caller said that she was sick from what she feared was contaminated water.
Other callers have complained about the lack of bottled drinking in local stores. Key Food, on Quaker Avenue in Cornwall, quickly sold out of its gallon container of water and as of Wednesday morning only small bottles were available.
Mahoney says that in the absence of bottled water she advises people to boil water as a precautionary measure. She also suggests that the village would bring in a water truck to supply customers if there was a more direct threat to the water supply.
Comments:
What precisely is the contaminant that the village fears might be in the water? Bacteria? Fuel oil? Fertilizer?
