General News: State Funds to Improve Tax Assessment System
March 21, 2008
State senator Bill Larkin (R-C, Cornwall-on-Hudson) announced this week that Orange and Ulster Counties will receive $100,000 apiece in study grants to examine ways to reduce local government costs by making property tax assessment and collection more efficient.
"New York’s property tax system is probably the most complex and confusing property tax system in the nation," said Senator Larkin. "We have 1,128 different government entities providing assessments for taxpayers, compared to a national median of 85. These grants will help our counties streamline property assessment and tax collection services and eventually result in lowering property taxes for all New Yorkers."
New York is one of only three states that lacks statewide uniform assessment standards.
By allowing counties across the state to study collaborative approaches to tax assessing, the grants will help local officials determine what assessing structure will be the most fair for their taxpayers.
The grants will be administered by the Office of Real Property Services, in cooperation with the Commission on Local Government Efficiency and Competitiveness.
