General News: Village Gets Grant for Waterfront Planning

April 18, 2007

The village of Cornwall-on-Hudson has received a $60,000 grant from state senator Bill Larkin to begin planning for permanent low profile pier head at the village’s public launch and docking facility.

Village mayor Joseph Gross made the announcement at the village board meeting on Monday night.

John Wenz, the chair of the Riverfront Revitalization Committee,  explained that the funding, which was requested by former mayor Ed Moulton, could be used to design the foundation for either a permanent dock or a floating dock. He stressed that no decision had been made about what type of pier would ultimately replace the aging dock now used at the village boat launch ramp.

Wenz said this is “funding for phase one, to build a base for it, the attachment place. This is the right direction to go in no matter what we do as we continue to discuss with village residents what exactly we want to do.”

Wenz has promoted the concept of a floating dock that would be put into the water during boating season and removed during the winter months.  The L-shaped structure would go out from the shore 100 feet then turn south and continue for 200 feet.  Wenz said that the shape would create a lee area for safer kayak and boat launching.

The village master plan committee is recommending a permanent dock at the public landing, one that would allow tour boats to tie up. This dock is referred to as the Mary Powell dock in reference to a steam boat that served Cornwall landing in the 1800s.

Wenz mentioned at Monday’s meeting that the two ideas are not mutually exclusive, noting that a floating dock can be wide enough to promenade on and can handle larger boats.  He estimates the cost of the floating dock at $250,000.

At the Master Plan Committee public hearing on Saturday, committee chair Lee Murphy said he envisioned a simple T-shaped permanent dock that was less expensive, about $100-150,000.
