General News: Village Recycling Changes

Recycle
March 18, 2008

The village of Cornwall-on-Hudson is cutting back on its recycling pickup schedules starting the week of May 5, 2008.

The village board of trustees on Monday approved a plan to go on a bi-weekly pick-up schedule with service every other Wednesday. The pickup will include all plastics, glass, newspapers, paper and cardboard. A complete list of items that are recycled for free by Orange County is available here.

David Halvorsen, the head of the Department of Public Works, told the trustees that the change would mean a savings of $8,000 a year in fuel alone. In addition, he noted that overtime costs will be reduced, along with wear-and-tear on the vehicles.

Halvorsen later explained that the village could save even more money if residents separated more of their waste and recycled all eligible items. He said that it costs the village to get rid of the garbage, while the recycling disposal is free.

In January, the village spent $8,800 to get rid of 110 tons of garbage, according to DPW records. Another 43 tons of waste was recycled at no charge -- or even with a small rebate from purchasers.

The DPW intends to send a notice to all property owners explaining the change in recycling pick up schedules. The plan kicks in the week of May 5, 2008.

For those interested in hazardous waste disposal, visit the village website for more information at www.cornwall-on-hudson.org.

Comments:

Great! Now we get to keep our recyclables twice as long. I would think that this will annoy people enough that they will end up throwing more recyclable material in the garbage rather then having it stored in their home. I anticipate garbage costs to rise.

If the village really wants to help us REUSE, REDUCE, and RECYCLE, then it needs to RETHINK this decision. Especially if it's true that the village can save even more money if more people recycled. Why not find ways to encourage that? Maybe have garbage pickup once a week instead of twice a week?

garbage pickup once a week sounds like a good idea on the surface but its a health issue. how about paying per bag.

The Town of Cornwall has been providing bi-weekly pick up of recycling since the inception in 1991 and it has been working fine. The Town covers a much larger area and is able to provide the services efficiently on a bi-weekly program
