As the Storm King Engine company’s annual fair gets underway next Wednesday, Chief Jeff Armitage says that members of the firehouse are working hard to put on a great community event.

Live Music at Night

“We try to have events for the young and older,” he says, describing the live music that will play Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday evenings. Binky the Clown, Macaroni the Clown and Wilcox Magic Shows will each visit one evening from Wednesday through Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. Radio station K104 will be there with a DJ on Friday night.

Discounts on Fun

The rides, run by a vendor who comes back every year, are a huge attraction for the little ones who also can try games of chance. Unlimited rides for an evening will cost fairgoers $15.00. Food is sold half-price each evening from 6 to 7 p.m.

“We get great support from the community for the fair,” Armitage says. “About 100 local businesses help sponsor the event with large and small donations.” Raffle items include a work of art donated by Bethlehem Art Gallery and a television donated by Wal-mart.

Firehouse Fundraiser

Some of the funds raised are used to sponsor social events at the firehouse on Halloween and Christmas and to help some families in need. Two annual scholarships are given to graduates of Cornwall Central High School.

The Fair’s Early Years

The fair has evolved since it started in the 1950s.

“Back then we held the fair on the Idlewild Street where we closed the street every night and put up games and food stands,” Armitage says. “Every night we had to take it down and re-open the road.”

The fair continued into the late 1970s, when it was discontinued for several years, according to Armitage. He re-instituted the tradition in 1985 and has been running it ever since.

This year’s fair at the C-O-H elementary school starts on Wednesday, July 26 and runs through Saturday, July 29.

MUSIC SCHEDULE: Wednesday, the rock band CREAM, from 7-9 p.m.
Thursday, the GENTLEMEN OF JAZZ, from 7-9 p.m.
Saturday, AJ AND THE HEARTS, from 7-9 p.m.
