Eliot Spitzer, democratic candidate for governor in November's election, made a campaign stop at Nicky's restaurant in the village this evening.
Spitzer, who is the frontrunner in the race, arrived in the village around 5:30 p.m., where he was greeted by dozens of supporters from the village, town and county.
Cornwall Town Supervisor Richard Randazzo introduced the candidate. Randazzo, a democrat, is running to unseat Republican State Assemblywoman Nancy Calhoun. Two candidates hoping to challenge Republican Sue Kelly in the U.S. congressional race joined the mostly local crowd -- Ben Shuldiner and Darren Rigger. A third candidate, John Hall, was represented by a campaigner handing out literature.
Spitzer spoke to the crowd for several minutes, addressing the need to reduce property taxes statewide as well as to invest in industry in order for "our kids to stay here."
"Eight years ago the Attorney General's office wasn't speaking to the values and principles we care about," Spitzer said. "Now we have to bring the same changes to the governor's office."
Spitzer has served as Attorney General for nearly eight years. His term has been marked by vigorous prosecution of corporations that operate outside the law and by defense of consumers' rights.
