Crosswalk signs outside of village hall |

Pedestrians trying to cross Hudson Street will have an easier time of it now that markers that warn drivers to be on the lookout for them have been put back in place. More than a half-dozen fluorescent yellow and orange markers are situated in crosswalks from the gazebo along Hudson to the village boundary and down Route 218.
Bob Gilmore, the head of the village's Department of Public Works, says that the pedestrian crosswalk signs are taken down in the winter and put back up when the danger of a big snowstorm has passed. He says his crews erected the signs earlier this week.
Mayor Joe Gross, who said he is concerned about vehicles speeding in the village, has talked about the importance of improving pedestrian safety. Village clerk Jeanne Mahoney said that while the placement of the signs each spring is routine, this year the mayor encouraged the DPW to "do it quickly."
Mahoney also noted that the new mayor, Joe Gross, held his first village staff meeting on Friday and didn't make any major changes. "He doesn't want to bombard people with too much too soon," Mahoney commented, adding that that Gross "has quite a few items up for review." He also warned staff members, she said, to watching their spending.
